Who is this event for?
Creative industry freelancers who wish to understand managing their finances a bit more and in particular, how to negotiate a fair rate for their services. Also, developing their personal time management and priorities in a more effective way.
What's the aim of the event?
The aim of the session is to develop personal priority and time management and to cost and negotiate improved rates. As a result of the session, freelancers will be able to:
- Review and prioritise their current and future workload.
- Understand the basic principles of finance as a freelancer.
- Prepare and negotiate terms and rates effectively.
- Review and better manage their personal finances.
- Establish the importance of ‘the source’ crew database to their business.

Welcome - An overview of the session and an introduction to the key speakers, with Alison Whitlock, Development Executive, Skills, EM Media.
Need a 25 Hour Day? - The key principles of effective priority setting and effective time management in the creative industries, with Alec McPhedran, Managing Director, Skills Channel TV.
The Basics of Finance - Even as a freelancer, reviewing the need to understand cash flow, profit and loss, balance sheets and budgeting and how to use this information to cost and negotiate your personal rates and terms with Alec McPhedran, Managing Director, Skills Channel TV.
The Way It Is - Managing your business in the current financial climate and the importance of good financial and tax management with support from local organisations.
Do you want some source with that? - This session will highlight how many enquiries EM Media receives through The Source, what kind of productions we’ve assisted as a result and what they say about the service. You’ll find out why it’s so important to keep your profile up-to-date and why the Enhanced Service offers so many benefits, with Nic Smith & Dan Hodgett, Locations Executives, EM Media.
Open Forum - Informal question and answer session with all session speakers at The Mezzanine Bar, Broadway Media Centre, Nottingham
Is there a charge for the event and how do I book a place at the event?
The fee for this event is £7.50.
